In 2005 the Australian Government commissioned the 'North-South Rail Corridor Study' in order to assess future rail freight demand across the Melbourne-Sydney-Brisbane corridor. This study found the most competitive route for rail was the Melbourne-Brisbane corridor, and that congestion issues in Sydney were a key constraint.

Objectives

This study has two overarching objectives:

  • To perform a robust and like-for-like engineering an environmental comparative assessment of the three alternative investigation corridors against the Base Case Modified route, which is a modification to the 23010 Base Case route. The key changes being the bypass of Inglewood and the refinement of the section from Yargullen to Kingsthorpe.
  • To develop comparative cost estimates of the options against the Base Modified route.
