Inland Rail is a 1,700km freight rail line directly connecting Melbourne and Brisbane, bypassing the heavily congested Sydney network. Inland Rail will build on existing regional and rural rail connections that will provide access to the ports of Melbourne, Port Kembla, Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

Inland Rail will be a fast, efficient and reliable freight line with a transit time of under 24 hours which is essential to meeting market demands.

Inland Rail is a key initiative of the Australian Government’s $100 billion infrastructure pipeline.

Inland Rail is the right solution

Inland Rail is a strategic investment in Australia’s freight future that will serve the market for the next century and beyond. As Australia’s population increases, so do the demands on our transport network. We must act now to effectively meet the freight transport needs of our nation.

Australia’s freight volumes are expected to double within 20 years and currently 74 per cent of all inter-capital freight between Brisbane and Melbourne is carried by road. Increasing the size and number of trucks on our highways to meet growing freight volumes will have significant safety, environmental and community consequences.

Trucks use almost three times as much fuel as trains to do the same job, road accidents causing death or serious injury are nearly three times more likely in comparison to rail, and trucks emit 750,000 more tonnes of carbon emissions each year than trains doing the same job.

Once Inland Rail is operational, road and rail will both do their part in sharing the freight task, with rail taking over more of the heavy long-haul freight movement.

A typical 1,800 metre Inland Rail train will have the capacity to carry the same volume of freight as 110 B-Double trucks, making Inland Rail an ideal option to move heavy and bulk goods over long distances.

It will deliver strong regional and national benefits

When completed, Inland Rail will provide a strategic infrastructure corridor for eastern Australia, creating the opportunity to optimise development of local and regional road and rail links by state and local governments.

The project will deliver a competitive rail service, increase national productivity, and, importantly, boost the regional economies along the Inland Rail corridor. Regional businesses and farmers will be able to take advantage of new opportunities for export growth and get their produce to market when and where it is required at a better price. Supply chain costs are a significant component of the price consumers pay for goods with up to 10 per cent of the final cost coming from transportation costs.

Inland Rail is an investment in Australia’s infrastructure future that will serve the freight market for the next century and beyond. Not only will it deliver a freight service between Melbourne and Brisbane that is cost-competitive with road, it will also lower transit times, reduce emissions and improve the reliability of freight transport. Its construction will deliver significant flow-on benefits, such as regional employment and opportunities for the construction industry.

A service offering backed by industry

The Inland Rail Service Offering was developed by the Australian Rail Track Corporation in consultation with Australia’s major freight stakeholders to ensure it will deliver what they require now and into the future.

Inland Rail will have a transit time of under 24 hours between Melbourne and Brisbane, 98 per cent reliability, flexibility for faster and slower services, and make freight available when the market wants it. These standards are informed by industry.

Inland Rail needs to meet the future demands of Australia’s freight challenge and be competitive with road, cost efficient and reliable.

Meeting the Inland Rail service offering is essential to not only the success of this project, but also to the delivery of the jobs and opportunities that the Inland Rail project will deliver to regional Australia.

Inland Rail will be an important contributor to national productivity by reducing freight transport costs between Melbourne and Brisbane, improving service standards and moving some freight transport off the congested road network.

Inland Rail will be fully connected across the rail network allowing trains to seamlessly travel between Melbourne and Brisbane via Parkes and connect Brisbane to Adelaide and Perth.
